Its time to give back
This section will feature creative and secure ways to donate money and time to smaller organizations and grassroots projects that can use our love and support.
There is a small pueblo in Guatemala that was ravaged during the war leaving the people without food, homes or schools for the children. In the rebuilding of Guatemala this is a community that has been continually over looked by the Guatemalan government.
Patricia and wonderful woman from the United States has worked tirelessly and made it her life's work to build schools and get stoves and fresh water into many of the homes in this pueblo...but not without help!
She looks to charitable souls from many countries to help her with this project. Some give money and others their time. There are opportunities to teach the children, help build facilities as well as donating money, computers or books to the schools. A donation of $100 can put a stove and a water purifier in a family's home.

Applying it to the Real World!
There is much work to do when we are on the path to clarity and real happiness. It doesn't come easy and we may find that more and more of our time is spent on this inward journey. What a challenging, yet joyful way to spend our time, especially as our work begins to show a return. Contentment and real happiness. Sadly, we many never see such a return if we don't apply what we have learned in our practice to our daily lives.
It seems silly to sit for hours in deep meditation and then swat the fly that we perceive to be obstructing our inner peace. Compassion for others and ourselves is what we look to cultivate in these contemplative practices. It is little about the practice or the technique, but about the love it can awaken in our hearts. Oddly this can be seen as a selfish practice, as the love developed for every other being ultimately heals us. My work on the lake and with each of you comes for a deep place in my heart, but also serves to enlighten my soul as well.
Be generous with your love as it serves you even more than the person who receives it! If you have only one act to complete on this planet, one word to speak, make sure it is filled with love and truth. Our actions and words have power. Use them well as they have the potential to heal.
Recognize that your yoga practice, meditations or teaching is for a higher purpose then exercise or mental tranquility. It is our small way of creating goodness in the world.
I hope you had a beautiful summer and are enjoying our new Newsletter. We would love to hear your thoughts. The Newsletter is a labor of love and was created to be a resource for its readers. Please, if you will, offer us any suggestions so we can better meet your needs.
Much Love Always,
Paula

TAKING OSTEOPOROSIS into CONSIDERATION
As Pilates increases in popularity, those of you with the low bone density conditions known as osteoporosis and osteopenia should be aware of potentially dangerous exercises to avoid as well as beneficial ones to add into your workout regimen. Pilates mat classes offer great benefits in strengthening the core, balancing the musculature of the body, increasing flexibility, developing coordination, improving alignment and posture, promoting proper breathing and enhancing joint range of motion. But 75 percent of the classical mat exercises involve flexion of the spine (forward bending) which is contraindicated (advised against) for those with osteoporosis and osteopenia. The bending of the spine can lead to fractures of the vertebrae. Side bending and rotation - especially when combined with forward bending - are also advised against.
That said, what can be done in a Pilates class? Any exercise lying on your back (supine) without lifting your head, on your stomach (prone), on your side, or on your hands (or elbows) and knees (quadruped) is safe to execute. And what type of exercises are recommended for those with osteoporosis and osteopenia? Spinal extension (working the back), hip extension and abduction (working the muscles of the back and side of the leg and pelvis), as well as weight bearing on the hands are great strengtheners for the bones and assist in maintaining an upright spine. And when done properly these exercises involve the core and provide isometric abdominal control.
Pilates in a modified form offers a myriad of benefits and can be enjoyed by all. As long as you know what to avoid and what to perform, let Pilates serve you!

What those who are in the know what to know
This section will feature what is cutting edge in the world of healing, fitness and more.
Dont throw out your Chia Pet Yet!!!
I started eating Chia seeds a number of years ago after learning about them from a good friend. Like most people I only knew of the dusty Chia pets you get at the office holiday secret Santa!! Needless to say I was amazed by their nutritional value and potential health benefits. I decided to incorporate them into my diet by keeping it very simple- 1 tablespoon each morning with a glass of water. The immediate effects were a slight increase in energy and a curb in my appetite, and over time I found that they really helped to keep me regular!!!
The history of the Chia seeds goes back to the ancient Aztecs and the Indians of the south west. It was said that the Aztec warriors, lived on the Chia seeds during the conquests, and the Indians of the south west ate one teaspoon full when going on a 24 hr. forced march. Not recommend,
but interesting!
How is works is that the Chia contains hydrophilic (water absorbing) cells that absorbs more than 12 times their weight in water. This ability to hold on to moisture results in prolonged hydration and allows the body to retain moisture not water (yeah!) and its electrolyte balance. When mixed in a glass of water, the seeds dissolve and turn into a gelatin-like substance caused by the soluble fiber in the Chia. Not only is this is beneficial for diabetics but it also creates endurance since carbohydrates are the fuel for energy in our bodies.
As for their nutritional value, the seeds are very rich in the vegetable source of essential omega-3 fatty acid, rich in linoleic (unsaturated fatty acid) which the body cannot manufacture, a rich source of calcium as they contain the mineral boron which allows for the absorption and utilization of calcium in the body, a source of protein and they contain beneficial long-chain triglycerides (LCT) which helps reduce cholesterol in the arterial walls.
