Its time to give back
This section will feature creative and secure ways to donate money and time to smaller organizations and grassroots projects that can use our love and support.

Sometimes in life we really do come across and angel. Sister Jane is as close to an angle as one can find. In a small village in Cameroon she has brought together a group of people to care for 43-orphaned children. There are 50,000 orphaned children in the North-West province of Cameroon alone, most living on the streets. The children that live with Sister Jane are no longer orphans as she has made them her family. None of these children are even adoptable. If you watch the short film on the site you can help but be inspired by her l work. It seems that her project starts and ends with the miracle of love with very little else in between.

Sister Jane has a wonderful and lofty vision of creating little communities such as this around the Africa. I believe if anyone could make this happen it would be her. Any money that is received is used for the children and to create small business for the older children to work in that can help sustain their unique family

Leading and Learning: Trusting the process of yoga

A few months ago I was browsing a yoga blog that featured a video of a high profile Yoga teacher doing a long string of complicated poses in the middle of a stadium of on lookers. It was being compared to a contortionist doing a performance that appeared very similar. The person who ran the blog asked the question "Is this Yoga? " One of the readers answered sounding somewhat annoyed; Yoga is about non-judgment and is defined by one's intention. This puzzled me and lead me to think about what Yoga really is, or has become. I have always understood the asana practice to be a science meant to prevent and heal disease. A practice that creates an environment in the body that is restful and thus healing. If that is true then the very dexterous woman on the video was a skilled athlete for sure, but she was not doing Yoga. I began to wonder is this what we are communicating to our students or is this what Yoga has become in the West?

I questioned the hybrid Yoga currently being taught. Are these variations coming out of Yoga's true nature, which is self-discovery? This would be exciting. Are the classes featuring fast moving vinyasas and complex poses meant to lead the students to a deeper understanding of themselves, or are they being given exotic versions of gym exercises because the students want "a work out"? Why is there a fear to be true to the wisdom of this science? Because a quite mind is not what we believe the students are coming for?

This is an excerpt from an article I wrote for the October issue of Fit Yoga. To read more go to www.fityoga.com

I also wanted to bring your attention to the Karma Yoga section of the Newsletter. Sister Jane is an amazing woman doing incredible work for the children in Cameroon. Just reading her story can inspire to go out there and serve.
I spoke with a woman the other day who shared with me that she selfishly does random acts of kindness everyday. I tried it and I could quickly seewhy she calls it a selfish act. There is nothing more important you can do each day then sharing your love! Have an inspired October!!

Much Love Always,
Paula

My Belly, My Guru - A Journey with Somatic Healing
by Eve Tai

A few years ago my digestive system began crashing. I was 44 years old and up until that time, I'd been leading an active and healthy life in Seattle, full of yoga and fresh air and organic food. But within the space of one week, my gut began to ache all the time. Nobody could figure out what was wrong, and I was convinced me that it would only be a matter of months before I'd have to go on a feeding tube. After a series of diagnostic tests, I learned that aside from an enzyme deficiency, "nothing was wrong." (Talk about good news, bad news.) At least nothing that involved disease. What to do? My doctor, a wonderful woman named Hope, suspected an emotional connection. So she suggested that I see Suzie Thomas, a somatic therapist here in Seattle.

The word "soma" stems from the Greek word for "body." As Suzie notes, "Somatic Imaging is a method of self-inquiry and inner listening designed to lead you out of your "story," your habitual, intellectual, way of analyzing, pre-concluding, and controlling your experience." Suzie believes that physical symptoms are often messages from unresolved or repressed emotional experiences. Our sessions are similar to "talk therapy," but the difference is that the process doesn't involve thinking so much as feeling. (Other somatic therapists may choose to work through movement or touch.) I'll close my eyes as Suzie verbally guides me toward visualizations related to my stomach aches. In this open space, images and memories arise and we work with them to decipher their message.

Suzie has taught me to pay attention to my physical symptoms, to have a dialogue with them as opposed to trying to get rid of them. She has helped me hear and interpret those seemingly random pains into elegant messages sent by my gut. I laugh a lot during these sessions and that alone is great for the belly.

I've been working with Suzie and Somatic Imaging for about a year and a half. Along the way I have unearthed many childhood emotional pains that dearly needed attention. Once they were heard, the pains gradually dissolved, leaving a beautiful sense of freedom. With this freedom my capacity for joy has really blossomed. Not because all the pain is gone, but because I now feel a connection to something wiser and bigger and most of all, bountifully loving.

The Miracle Oil
by Rhonda Chahine

Over a year and a half ago I discovered Trilogy, an all natural and organic skin care line from New Zealand. I don't talk about my skin care products but I love this line so much, especially their rosehip oil, that I decided to include it in this month's newsletter. Trilogy's products are clean, simple and free of synthetics, the company is ethically and environmentally responsible and rosehip oil (a miracle oil also sold on its own) is an essential ingredient in each of the products.

I have been using Trilogy's rosehip oil on my skin for almost 2 years now and I'm stunned by its benefits. For those of you who don't know much about it, rosehip oil is a nutrient rich oil extracted from the seeds of the rosehip and loaded with essential fatty acids. Because it's so fine, it absorbs into the skin instantly (without causing oiliness) while letting it breathe. It can be used anywhere on the body, does wonders for the skin after sunbathing, reduces scarring, restores the skins moisture balance, assists the skin in renewing and repairing itself and releases the skins healthy glow. And, because they do not advertise, the product are fairly reasonable.

And for those of you in Manhattan, you can obtain samples at: Santa Maria Novella
285 Lafayette Street
New York, NY 10012
1-800-362-3677

The store is beautiful and worth a visit, even if you don't buy anything. If you do visit, speak with John, the owner (usually there on Sundays). He is very knowledgeable and in all the time I've been going, has never pushed a sale to make a buck.
